(Seal Coating Scams)

In recent weeks the Mundelein Police Department has taken several reports of seal coating scams. Our elderly residents are most often the targets of these scams.  The suspects are described as being either being Hispanic or European.  One such subject identified himself as “Tommie Ely”.  The suspects can be alone or accompanied by one or two other “family members” and their ages will be between late teens to early forties.  They will approach elderly residents who are working in their yard and offer to do home repairs or driveway seal coating. Normally they drive a pick-up truck with a tank mounted in the bed of the truck.  After the work is done, they will ask for a large cash payment.  They will offer to follow the homeowner to the bank to receive their money.  They are friendly, but very persuasive, and previous victims have felt intimidated during conversations.

We are asking for your help.

Please contact Investigator Paul Dempsey or Sgt. John Monahan at  847-968-4600 if you have seen anything similar to the above.  If you are suspicious of someone soliciting in your neighborhood, call 911 as you see it occurring.

Remember, all solicitors must be registered with the Village of Mundelein to solicit services and carry a Village of Mundelein Solicitors Permit with their picture.

For all of our senior residents – if anyone comes to your home soliciting driveway repairs or any other type of repairs or service, do not hesitate to call 911 and we will help you verify the legitimacy of their business.

Dial 911 if you observe any suspicious persons or activity in your neighborhood.  Help us protect our elderly residents by watching over them and calling 911.

Thank you.
